David A. Gavrich, President & CEO
Before co-founding Waste Solutions Group in 1991, Mr. Gavrich served as the Vice President of Corporate Development for one of the nation's largest waste management firms. He has more than twenty-five years experience developing and implementing solid waste projects, with emphasis on the contractual, political and regulatory aspects of industrial and governmental waste projects. Mr. Gavrich serves as WGS’s executive-in-charge of WSG’s operations. Until 1990, Mr. Gavrich was Director of Browning-Ferris Industries' (BFI) Resource Recovery & Recyling operations in the Pacific Region where he initiated, developed, marketed and negotiated over $300 million in long-term recycling and landfill contracts.

Prior to joining BFI, Mr. Gavrich was the Director of Solid Waste Management under Mayor Dianne Feinstein of the City and County of San Francisco, where he was in charge of administering the City's solid waste program and assessing the impact on ratepayers of changes to collection and disposal operations. Mr. Gavrich and his staff initiated San Francisco’s curbside recycling program, which was the first in a major U.S. city.

Mr. Gavrich’s team at City Hall also developed long-term transfer station and landfill capacity for San Francisco, which has given the city 60 years of solid waste security. Prior to his tenure in San Francisco, Mr. Gavrich served in the administration of President Jimmy Carter as Deputy Director of the President’s Urban Policy Program on Waste Management. He is an appointee to the California State Senate Task Force on Waste Management and was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Recycling Coalition from 1986 to 1991. He served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Integrated Waste Management Curriculum at University of California at Berkeley and taught two courses in waste management at UC Berkeley. Mr. Gavrich was selected by the San Francisco Business Times as 2007’s Most Admired CEO in the Bay Area. He received his Masters Degree in Environmental Planning from Harvard University and his Bachelors Degree from Rutgers College. Mr. Gavrich and his wife, Tina, have two boys, Maxx, 15, and Noah, 12, and they reside in San Francisco, CA.

Fred G. Hunziker, Vice President Business Development
Mr. Hunziker has over twenty-three years experience in the environmental field. Before joining Waste Solutions Group (WSG), Mr. Hunziker served in multiple capacities for Chemical Waste Management, Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) and most recently was the Director of Special Waste for Republic Services, Inc. the 2nd largest waste company in the US. Mr. Hunziker developed and implemented strategic programs to cultivate a winning team culture to drive profitable growth across a six-state region. He received his Business Finance Bachelors Degree from California State University, Fresno where he wrestled on a full athletic scholarship. Mr. Hunziker has four children and resides in Clayton, CA.

Larry Frias, Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Frias as been involved in the management and administration of WSG’s radiological, hazardous and non-hazardous waste contracts for more than 5 years. During that time, he has been the lead contracts administrator for complex WSG projects, which have included: Chevron-Unocal Mission Bay; US Navy Mare Island project with CH2MHill; Hunters Point Naval Annex remediation project; New United Motors (NUMMI – General Motors/Toyota Joint Venture) ongoing waste account; SF MUNI Third Street Light Rail; and dozens of other complex projects. has handled the rail movements of in excess of 3 million tons of product. Mr. Frias is trained as an accountant, and handles all contracts-related and accounts-related issues in WSG’s Northern California division. Mr. Frias and his wife, Susan, have three boys, and live in Elk Grove, CA.

Nick Kendall Waste-by-Rail Operations Manager


Bobby Barnes (Waste-by-Rail Operations Manager)

Mr. Barnes has been involved in the movement of non-hazardous and hazardous wastes in California for more than 10 years. Mr. Barnes is 40-hour HAZWOPR certified and is trained to operate rail locomotives for WSG’s sister company, San Francisco Bay Railraod (SFBR). He is a trained transfer station supervisor, mechanic and crane and locomotive operator overseeing all operations in WSG’s transfer stations and railyard at the Port of San Francisco. He is responsible for all safety and regulatory compliance for WSG’s operational activities and equipment, including transfer equipment, containers, trailers, cranes, forklifts, locomotives and company vehicles associated with WSG and SFBR activities and projects .

Mike Okada (Asst. Operations Manager –California)
Mr. Okada has been involved in the movement of non-hazardous and hazardous wastes in California for more than 2 years. Mr. Okada is 40-hour HAZWOPR certified and is trained to operate rail locomotives for WSG’s sister company, LB Railco (SFBR). He is a trained mechanic and serves as the back-up supervisor to Mr. Barnes for a crew of crane and locomotive operators in WSG’s railyard at the Port of San Francisco. He provides Mr. Barnes with support for all operational activities and equipment, including containers, trailers, cranes, forklifts, locomotives and company vehicles.
